Great sights in Istanbul

Today we did an amazing walking tour of some of the most beautiful parts of Istanbul: Suleymaniye mosque, the Hippodrome, the blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace. I am grateful for Azlan's detailed posting with all the historical detail. Hopefully others will post pictures and details of their favorite parts soon, as well as photos of the great street food they've been eating. My personal favorite experiences for today were the tiles in the Topkapi Palace, what an array of colors and motifs, just beautiful. Also, the dome paintings in the different mosques were exquisite, it was hard to look down with all that beauty overhead.

On a more mundane note, the shopping in Istanbul is also very tempting -  I saw some beautiful Uzbekistan velvet by the yard today, wonderful carpets, and an array of gorgeous laser cut boots. The people in istanbul sure like shoes- many many shoe shops in this town. Still holding out for a nice lantern though.

This link shows one of the many amazing pavilions in thr Palace, filled with tiles and glass:..Baghdad pavilion, Topkapi Palace
